Site Tips
I have created a list of 'site tips' that I follow by and would recommend people follow by. It is in no way saying I am correct in everything I have wrote and all that mumble-jumble, all I say: is thus far it's worked perfectly for me.
avoid site drama - this is pretty self-explanitory and its on the top of my list because the drama thing can make and break your site. If you're someone who loves some drama and plans on bringing it into 'the siteworld' then just think twice and go do something else, like get a life. The 'site world' will always have its areas of drama and it's sad. There are people who create it, people who mix in with it, people who brag it about (those who yell about it from the rooftops and make plenty of attention towards themselves) and then there are the folks who don't give a crap (something I fit perfectly into). If someone wants to start drama with you, then honestly - just ignore it. It's not worth it. It's the old thing from being at school when it's common sense that people winding you up are doing it for a reaction, this is exactly what 'drama whores' are constantly doing. What kind of person do you know that would say something nasty and get a kick out of not getting replied too...exactly. When you react to it, you've just lit the match to the fire they built.
define a site name - one of the easiest and hardest things to do. Pick a site name and stick with it. Make it a name that possibly you have made up, something you really like, something that is catching & that other people would be interested in. Also it's a good idea to never have a site name that is really long. Something like 'ohwhatisthisaboutwemakelayouts' sounds cool, but when putting it into a domain name? Yeah, it's not going to work. Make it something short and to the point. Try make it less than say 12 letters and no more than two words (unless you shorten them to letters).
If you change your name too many times people (who visit your site) will most likely lose interest, and have no idea where you've gone or what you've changed your name too. Pick it and stick to it.
make quality content - now no one is saying you have to be the best but make an effort when making content. If you're having an off day, then leave it, do it later when you can be bothered. Something that is made when you're in the mood is loads different from when someone makes something and it clearly shows they either cannot be bothered, don't know what they are doing or clearly have no interest in what the thing is they are trying to achieve. You don't have to own photoshop (or any other popular photo editors) to make it big, just put some effort into what you create.
make a good amount of content - by having 2 colour schemes, 1 tutorial and a layout on your site, it's not gonna do your viewing figures any favours. Don't get me wrong, it is better to make 20 good things than a billion crap things. Just make sure there is enough content for people to actually have a look around. If by clicking one button they get to see the three things you offer, it becomes obvious that you haven't spent much time on creating anything (if you're a new site then definitely make the content waaaayyy in advance of opening the website - and plenty of it!).
have some manners - one thing in this 'site world' that I cannot stand is people having no manners. Sure there is a number of 'big' sites that have made it so assume they can be rude, but let's be honest - it's just rude. How much time does it take you to type 'thanks'. Its six letters. Not much. No one is saying you have to go around thanking everyone, seeing how everyone is, blessing them all when they sneeze... ~ hey I do that - not to strangers though ;D ~ just have some manners. If someone asks you a favour and you don't want to do it? Reply saying you're busy, you're walking your dog - you're doing something else - don't just ignore them.
Another thing, swearing. I swear, a lot sometimes but I rarely swear on my site or even my own personal facebook/twitter etc. Why? What's the point?. I swear when I am passionate or angry about something using my voice, which takes a split second to do. By typing it I have clearly thought about it enough to type it, which just makes people who perhaps don't swear and find it disrespectful read my words. Sure, I'll say crap and ass every now and again during my blogs and I am not disapproving of them, I'm talking of the words that are actually disgusting and I think we all know what word(s) that is.
don't steal (jock) from other sites - and for the love of all things shiny don't scream when someone steals from you when at some point YOU stole. That's just pathetic and people remember you stole at some point, so technically - you look an ass. Make your own content and if you need help then have a look online, mail someone and ask for advice. I tend to get emails asking simple things like 'what font is on...? Do you have any hellokitty brushes?' and I reply to them giving my answer. If someone has a problem or needs help I don't ignore them and I know many other sites who don't either, they'll reply. We all started out somewhere, so just ask if you need help - don't steal from us all.
don't threaten to quit every five seconds - all I have on this one is.... omfg. seriously.
If you plan on quitting then sure let everyone know, it's sad when someone quits. Especially when you've been good friends with them and to top it off you've spent ages talking to them and then it turns out they live across the world and the 'site world' was what made you hit it off in the first place, but seriously...if you become someone who posts on their website/status/twitter/anyplace that you're quitting again then just stop. Especially when everytime you do all your 'site' friends run at you with a bat and beg you to stay, three comments later you've had a change of heart...again & again (yawn) and again. There is a title for people like that, and they tend to be called attention seekers.
stop saying you can't update cause you have a life - incase you hadn't noticed, we're all living. All existing right here, matey. If you can't update or you can't reply then fine you're busy, we get it. The fact you have to let us know you're living and can't communicate is completely insane. We get it, we live too. we...all...do. Sure some of us stay in more often than others, some of us update tons loads, some spend weekends reading a book with a cuppa, some go out there and (well they claim) to snort random shit up their noses. But really...we get it. Living ain't a secret club, we're all doing it. (unless you're an ninja, then ignore all of this block - clearly) o.o
always credit - its a simple one but really - always credit people when you use their content. Whether it's a template, a colour scheme, a pattern, a brush or even if their content inspired you to create something of your own. If anything it's nice. When someone tells you they've created something using something you've made or if theyre using something, it's nice. Plus it helps the designer create something more as they know it's being used.
don't try and be popular - I've been designing for a little over four years. But I'm not one of the sites that everyone talks about, I was never myspace famous. I was there, sure. I just never became big and to be honest, even though the 'big' sites looked like they where having fun - they also had drama and well, I couldn't and still cant be bothered with drama. I'm here to create and design, not to be the best site. We're all aiming for something, make it to be better not the latter.
